Catherine Root

Root is a recent cum laude graduate, with degrees in Fine Arts and Biomedical Sciences. Her group senior thesis exhibition titled Corpus Daisy, featured six of her artworks in Auburn University’s Biggin Gallery. She has been included in two additional exhibitions in Auburn, AL this year, the Annual Juried Fine Art Student Exhibition and the Fieldwork Project’s Juried Self Portrait Exhibition. She was the inaugural intern at Fieldwork Projects in 2014 and has been published in the Auburn University Student publication, the Auburn Circle.

Root’s submitted work is part of her untitled senior thesis research project. The series reveals contemporary concerns of theoretical and applied scientific practice via their translation into physical art objects. The pieces straddle the lines between traditional painting and sculpture, questioning their own highly apparent structural boundaries. Other concerns explored are the relative nature of knowledge, issues between esotericism and kitsch, and the specialization produced by the vastness of cognition. Ultimately, the distinct pieces conjoin to display the comorbidity of these contentions in both fields of science/technology and visual art.
