GRADUATE STUDENT, INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Fangyi is a graduate industrial design student at Auburn University. He likes photography, drawing and making. He believes the responsibility of industrial designers is to build a connecting bridge between functionality and aesthetics. Fangyi wants to be an innovator in his design career, either in problem solving or in creating a better user experience.

The Raistand is a modern nightstand design inspired by Chinese traditional “Raised Edge Cabinet”. The 85-degree taper makes the structure more stable and the form more elegant. Because of the taper, some frames need to be a diamond section and some tenons have a tilting angle. Two-level tabletop design gives the user a freedom to arrange the objects in a variety of different ways. Also, the bended steel rod is sandwiched between two pieces of wood to reinforce the tabletop corners.
