Laura Hammonds

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT, GRAPHIC DESIGN

Laura Hammonds is an Auburn University Graphic Design undergraduate student. Her work has been displayed in Auburn’s Wallace Hall, and she has been a chosen participant in the Auburn University Graphic Design Juried Show of 2015 and 2016. Most recently, Ann Willoughby and Auburn faculty awarded Laura with Best Illustration for her Alabama Bicentennial Quilt. Laura is also an active member of Auburn’s AIGA chapter; she has represented her chapter as Vice President and President.

The submitted piece displays Laura’s sewing and crafting skills which she has recently been exploring.  The shape of Alabama is pieced out of scraps of brightly colored fabric to replicate the unity of Alabamians. The final quilt is paired with a W. E. B. DuBois quote that encompasses the unique history of Alabama. Laura takes inspiration from the work of the Gee’s Bend Quilters, and created the piece to be used for the 2019 Alabama Bicentennial.
