Lydia Sweeney

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT, GRAPHIC DESIGN

Lydia Sweeney is a senior in the Auburn University Graphic Design Program who won the first place “Poster Award” in the Annual Graphic Design Juried Student Show.

The Alabama Bicentennial Poster was completed as an assignment for an illustration course with the objective of creating an image encompassing the diversity, history, and culture of Alabama. The poster communicates the old and the new of Alabama by combining hand-drawn images and the modern typeface Futura. As a state rich in culture, Alabama is represented with an abundance of identifiable places, jobs, wildlife, art, science, music, and activities. Alabama is a complex culture contrary to stereotyped ideas, and the purpose of this portrayal is to show the state’s intricate diversity. To tie the individual state back into the country, the background is a bright red and the overlying images are a subtle blue (which happens to be politically correct as well) that vibrate against each other, creating an overall aesthetically pleasing and eye-catching design.
