Since 2014 faculty and alumni from the Auburn University Graphic Design program have contributed original broadside designs and custom letterpress printing to the Third Thursday Poetry Reading Series at Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art. The broadside series is coordinated by Assistant Professor of Graphic Design, Robert Finkel, Associate Professor of Creative Writing, Keetje Kuipers, and JCSM Curator of Education and University Liaison, Scott Bishop. The prints are exhibited at the Jule Collins Smith museum year round. The broadsides have received awards from the “45th Annual UCDA Design Competition”, “Creative Quartery 38/39”, and “Signs of the Times: Juried Broadside Exhibition” at North Dakota University. The Third Thursday Poetry Series is made possible by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Each of the broadsides are unique visual interpretations of a poem submitted to the series by that month’s poet. Each broadside is printed in 2-colors. All designs share a single Pantone color and the second ink is selected by the designer. The dimensions of the prints, 8”x13”, is derived from a 26”x40” parent sheet to allow for more cost-effective and efficient in-house production management. All printing and finishing is completed using the Design department’s letterpress, a Vandercook SP15.
