Culture Bump is in the news!

Humans being connected through culture bumps

There has been a lot of chatter recently about the Culture Bump program which is co-led by Assistant Director of the Biggio Center, Dr. Stacey Nickson, and Dr. Carol Archer of the University of Houston. This unique program trains companies, universities, and schools in cross-cultural diversity. Dr. Nickson and Dr. Archer travel globally to train leaders who are interested in cultural communication literacy. They will be at Auburn University from March 11th through 15th to conduct a certification seminar.

The following news articles detail the program and its various benefits for participants:

“AU Leads Global Communication Training”

“Auburn University to serve as base for relations training”

“Alabama to be training base for ‘Culture Bump’”

The Culture Bump and Biggio Center websites have additional news and information about the program.

January 31 – “What Auburn Students Want from Faculty”

What does Small Group Instructional Feedback (SGIF) reveal about Auburn students’ academic expectations? How did the No Child Left Behind legislation influence student expectations and their responses to your course requirements? Biggio Center Assistant Director Stacey Nickson discusses the results of data collected from Auburn students over a 3-year period (2009 – 2011) by Biggio Center staff, using the SGIF process.

Viewers can use this information to better understand the impetus for students’ expectations, enhance student learning, improve course delivery and positively impact the experiences that students have in their classes.

January 15 – “Peer Review of Teaching”

Peer review of teaching is a form of evaluation designed to provide formative feedback to instructors about teaching and learning. It can also be used in summative ways. Dr. Buskist presents a detailed 5-step model for applying peer review at Auburn University with hands-on and practical tips.

Biggio Center supports Auburn University Fulbright associates participating in MLK Day events in Birmingham

The Alabama Chapter of the Fulbright Association recently hosted Fulbright scholars (both international and local) attending Martin Luther King Day activities in Birmingham.  The Biggio Center provided logistical support for Auburn University Fulbright scholars Dr. Sukhamoy Bhattacharyya from India (Physics) and Ms. Nonkonzo Pamela Makhubu from Swaziland (Fisheries).  Dr. Stacey Nickson, a Fulbright associate, led the group through two days of activities.  They attended the MLK Unity breakfast, where they met historic figures from America’s civil rights era and learned first-hand about the leadership role of Birmingham and Alabama in American history.  In addition, they toured the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and participated in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) 50th observance of the tragic bombing at the historic 16th Street Baptist Church.

Also in attendance were Fulbright associates representing six other countries and colleges throughout Alabama. The event provided a unique opportunity for international, historical, and cultural exchange.

The Biggio Center is preparing future faculty to think globally

The Biggio Center’s Preparing Future Faculty program is a year long and trains doctoral students at Auburn to become effective and successful faculty members at higher education institutions across the globe. The program’s cohort meets weekly for workshops and events with specific topics and skills in mind.

On January 10th, Dr. Stacey Nickson led a 2 hour presentation for the 2012-2013 PFF cohort titled “Negotiating Difference.” She introduced the students to the Culture Bump Approach, an interactive, multi-media process that includes an 8-step tool to manage any cultural difference (gender, ethnicity, age, race, socio-economic class, language, religion, etc.) on a more personal level. The process teaches participants how to connect with anyone on the planet.

The Culture Bump theory and approach were created by Dr. Carol Archer, a Biggio Center consultant. Dr. Archer has taught the approach to university audiences, Fortune 500 corporate clients, and to governments across the globe, from the United States to the Middle East, Latin America, and Asia. She has also taught all ages, from college students to primary age children.

For the past two years, the PFF curriculum has included Dr. Nickson’s Culture Bump presentation in order to prepare the cohort for careers on the global academic landscape. Students respond positively to the training, indicating their appreciation for the progressive and personal approach to negotiating differences that the Biggio Center promotes through the Culture Bump Approach.

For more information about Culture Bump and how to get trained in Auburn, visit the web page. Culture Bump Training will take place on Auburn’s campus over Spring Break (March 11-15). The registration deadline is February 15th. For more details about this specific training or to register, click here.

Biggio Center hosts first ever Spring GTA Orientation

The Auburn Hotel was buzzing with enthusiasm and energy as nearly 80 new GTA’s to Auburn University assembled to prepare for the new semester on Monday January 7th. This Spring GTA Orientation was the first ever hosted by the Biggio Center. Its concept had been in the works for years, and the Biggio Center finally had the capabilities to put it on this year.

GTA’s from a variety of colleges and departments across campus attended the afternoon event. Orientation began with a welcome by Biggio Center director Dr. Jim Groccia and associate director Dr. Raj Chaudhury. GTA fellows guided new GTA’s through their first week responsibilities and possibilities for starting off the semester right.

The large group dispersed into break-out sessions that included information and tutorials about using technology in the classroom, teaching lab sections, effective discussion strategies, and what to do when there’s trouble in the classroom. All break out sessions were crafted and led by Biggio Center GTA fellows, a select group of doctoral and masters students who participate in professional development activities through the Biggio Center. The end of the afternoon brought excitement for a raffle- several participants won Biggio Center mugs and travel thermoses.

The Biggio Center hosts a larger scale orientation in the fall for new faculty and GTA’s. This spring orientation was geared specifically to assist new graduate students entering Auburn University who hold a teaching position in some capacity as well as current Auburn graduate students who will be teaching for the first time in the spring. In keeping with the Biggio Center’s mission to enhance teaching and learning on campus, this new orientation is vital in ensuring that new GTA’s on campus feel prepared and confident before teaching Auburn students for the first time. Spring orientation fills a gap that had previously left GTA’s with little information before getting started in their new roles.

Because of the orientation’s success, it is an event the Biggio Center intends to host every spring for new GTA’s.

GTA Fellows Train Communication GTA’s

On Friday, November 9th, the inaugural year GTA Fellows trained 17 GTA’s from the Communication department on campus. The training consisted of a variety of topics: teacher behavior checklist, problems in the classroom, active learning and discussion strategies, and open discussions about specific concerns. The two hour session  involved group work and collaboration. The Communication GTA’s were engaged, highly interactive, and enthusiastic about this professional development opportunity.

The GTA fellows are available for trainings like this in any department on campus. The topics can be adjusted to specific departmental needs.
