Meet the Staff Mondays: Ashley Goerke

If we took a little stroll back in time, this time last year, our poetry editors were reviewing submissions for the Fall 2012 issue. Out of the submissions, they accepted and decided to publish Ashley Goerke’s poem, “Connections.” Now, a year later, Ashley is one of our awesome poetry editors and has been hard at work reviewing our talented submitter’s work this semester. Meet Ashley, our submitter turned poetry editor.

If you had to choose between JK Rowling and JR Tolkien, who would you choose and why?

This is such a hard question. My cat is named after Peregrin Took from The Lord of the Rings trilogy and I recently re-read The Hobbit, but I think I have to pick the woman who first taught me how to love reading so JK wins (but it was close.)

If you were a Disney character, who would you be?

I always saw myself as a Jasmine not because I look like her, but also because she’s sassy and strong and smart. Plus she owns a tiger and can ride a flying carpet around the world so there’s that.

What was the last book that you read? Was it any good?

The last book I read was actually rereading The Fault in Stars by John Green for an education course. In my opinion, it’s an excellent example of actually good Young Adult Fiction. I definitely recommend it for a light read.

If a movie was made about your life, who would you chose to play your role?

Keira Knightley. We look nothing alike and I’m not British, but she’s fabulous and I’m sure she would portray me better than I could portray myself.

Favorite part about working for the Circle?

I love reading all of the submission and seeing how amazing some poets are. There is some serious talent on this campus.

Favorite piece from past Circle’s?

I really loved Jordan Pankey’s “Dizzy” from the Spring 2013 issue
