Shelby Roberts: AU Human Sciences – Summer Program in Kathmandu, Nepal Summer 2022

During the summer of 2022 I completed an internship in Nepal with an anti-human tracking organization. This organization is one of few in the country that trains their staff about different types of trauma and how to handle unique situations. The organization has five teams: caregivers, teachers, counselors, security, and social workers. By working together I had the chance to witness them successfully rescue and provide proper support for numerous young girls. During my internship I established and ran their social media, and aided in the creation of fundraising and marketing materials.

I never thought I would love working 40 hours a week, but this experience allowed me to realize that it is possible to genuinely enjoy going to work. This internship brought me some of my best friends that I continue to talk to multiple times a week from the United States. Working with an anti-human trafficking NGO has really inspired me to look at human trafficking as a public health issue. This is one of many reasons I am continuing my education and pursuing a Master of Public Health this upcoming fall.
