Auburn returns from Savannah with a win

Your Auburn Tigers traveled to Savannah this past weekend to compete in the inaugural Cobblestone Cup. Joining the Tigers at the Savannah Civic Center were the Clemson Tigers, the Georgia Ice Dawgs, and the South Carolina Gamecocks.

The first game of the weekend was the battle of the Tigers as Auburn took on Clemson for the first time. The teams will meet again later in the season in Taylor, South Carolina.

Clemson wasted no time getting on the board, scoring 58 seconds into the game on a power play. Auburn answered later in the first with a goal from Scott “Bear” Thomasson with an assist from Sean Kemp. The first period ended with a 1-1 tie.

While Auburn was unable to get any more offense going, Clemson scored two more goals in the second and one in the third to make the final 4-1.

Following the Auburn/Clemson game, the Gamecocks shutout the Ice Dawgs 3-0.

South Carolina continued to take care of business against Clemson on Saturday winning 6-4, becoming the first team to take home the Cobblestone Cup.

After South Carolina and Clemson’s game Saturday, Auburn took the ice against Georgia looking for revenge. In a match up just two weeks prior, the Ice Dawgs seemed to easily defeat the Tigers 10-3. But Auburn showed what a difference a few weeks can make, defeating Georgia 3-1.

The Ice Dawgs opened the scoring with a goal less than two minutes into the first. It would be the only puck to get passed Tigers’ goalie Miles Bishop for the rest of the night. Ten minutes later, Auburn’s Trevor Hightower tied the game with an assist by Yiannis Kapetanopoulos.

Kapetanopoulos scored for Auburn five minutes into the second with assists from defensemen Sean Kemp and Max Coyle to break the tie. The second period ended with the Tigers up 2-1.

The game remained close with both teams getting several scoring chances in the third. With the final minutes ticking off the clock, Georgia pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. Tigers’ freshman Evan Barber took advantage of the empty net and scored, sealing up the 3-1 victory for Auburn.

The Auburn Tigers will travel to Huntsville, AL this weekend to play the University of Memphis. The puck drops on Friday at 8:40pm CST and Saturday at 7pm CST at the Wilcoxon Municipal Ice Plex.
