New Policies related to Student Organizations at Auburn University
Over the past year, Auburn University has implemented new policies to assist students in understanding the rights and responsibilities for all student organizations. It is important for all organization leaders to be aware of these policies and understand that their organizations should comply with these and all Auburn University policies.
Medical Assistance Policy
The health, safety, and welfare of Auburn University students are of the utmost importance. As such, all students are expected to alert appropriate emergency officials in potentially serious or life-threatening situations. The Medical Assistance Policy empowers students and student organizations to seek medical assistance for individuals who may be experiencing health-related complications from alcohol, drugs, or other substances.

Auburn University Trademark and Licensing Policy
Auburn University student organizations have rights to use the Auburn University name and registered marks. These marks come with responsibility and must be used appropriately as outlined in the Trademark Licensing Policy. The Office of Trademark Management & Licensing mission is to ensure that proper use and application of Auburn University trademarks. Their website has a number of resources, including approved licensees at auburn.edu/trademarks.
What is a Trademark?
A trademark (or mark) is any logo, symbol, nickname, letter(s), word, slogan, or derivative used by an organization, company or institution to identify its goods/services and distinguish them from other entities or competitors.
Any reference to the University or trademarks adopted hereafter and used or approved for use by Auburn University shall be subject to the policies and procedures of the Office of Trademark Management & Licensing. Additionally, any variations of the University marks which would cause consumers to erroneously believe that the product originated from or was sponsored or authorized by the University shall also be covered by the trademark licensing program policies and procedures.
Who Needs a License?
Licenses/approval must be obtained for the use of any AU trademark, image, or photograph used on any packaging (including hangtags, stickers), signage, banner, or product sold to the general public or to campus departments and organizations. In addition, promotional licenses must be obtained by companies or organizations wanting to associate with the University through any use of its trademarks and/or images.
Auburn University reserves the right to prohibit the use of its trademarks with certain issues and products, such as alcohol, tobacco, candidates for public office, those products that infringe upon another entity’s trademarks, or would be considered in poor taste by the general public. The University will not license products that do not meet minimum quality standards, are not in good taste, or items considered dangerous or high risk.
Representing Auburn University in an official capacity:
Officially sponsored student organizations which represent the university in intercollegiate competition, public performances, fund raising projects, printed literature, or any other endeavor must follow all policies and procedures just as they would for an on-campus event.
Other organizations may use the Auburn University name in appropriate manners. Auburn University Office of Trademark and Licensing was created to establish a foundation for promoting and protecting the use of its trademarks. Use of Auburn University’s name or other Auburn trademarks with an organization name implies association with the University. Therefore, only those student organizations that are officially registered by the Office of Student Involvement and official campus departments are allowed to use the Auburn University name or abbreviations with their official organization names.
However, the name Auburn University or AU should not be used prior to the name of the organization. Your constitution and all records with the Auburn University Office of student Involvement should reflect the name of the organization without the AU. (Example- The Society of Student Organizations at Auburn University is allowable, Auburn University Society of Student Organizations is NOT.)
Auburn logos and trademarks may be used, but may not be altered or used to spell out any name.
