The Political Projects sector of External Affairs represents the voice of the entire student body down in Montgomery. With events such as Capitol on the Plains, Higher Education Day, our council Lobby Days, and more, we strive to take the concerns and opinions of Auburn students directly to our state legislators. We work closely with Auburn University’s Office of Governmental Affairs and also the Higher Education Partnership in Montgomery.
Projects, Goals and Initiatives
Our two biggest events of the year are Capitol on the Plains and Higher Education Day. Each event is open to the entire student body and we encourage everyone to participate.
Capitol on the Plains
Capitol on the Plains is a campus discussion with a panel consisting of some of our state representatives and senators. Representatives are asked questions regarding new policy and important events going on in our state. At the end of the event, students will have an opportunity to ask any member of the panel a question.
Higher Education Day is an event held every year in Montgomery and hosted by Alabama’s Higher Education Partnership. Every public university in Alabama meets in Montgomery for a rally on the State House steps in order to lobby for more funding for Higher Education. At the end of the rally, legislators join students on the capital lawn for a barbeque lunch.
Higher Education Day – February 25, 2016
Lobby Board is a group of students whose purpose is maintaining communication between Auburn University and the Alabama State Legislature. A subsidiary of SGA Cabinet, Lobby Board is lead by the Directors of Political Affairs under the AVP of Political Affairs.
Twenty individuals are selected each fall to represent Auburn at events throughout the year including Higher-Education Day in Montgomery, Capitol on the Plains, etc. Lobby Board works closely with the Office of Governmental Affairs to bring a student perspective to Auburn’s efforts with the Legislature. Other responsibilities include coordinating voter registration drives, hosting prominent speakers on campus, and communicating the Auburn message to our elected officials.
