Judd Langham — Alumnus

Judd Langham (PLA, ASLA, LEED AP) enacts sustainability through both his work in the field and the classroom. Whether training the next generation of landscape architects or working with underserved populations, Judd empowers others to imagine the regenerative possibilities of a landscape that works in harmony with both nature and people. By utilizing innovative, sustainable design practices and working collaboratively with multiple partners, Judd is helping to transform the landscape of places both near and far.

Judd’s impact can be seen in the rain gardens in AU’s Davis Arboretum, the Phipp’s Healing Garden at John Hopkins University, and at Genetta Park, a wetland park, along the National Civil Rights Trail in Montgomery. His fingerprints can also be seen on countless other projects around the globe through the work of the many students Judd has influenced through his passion and knowledge on sustainable landscape design. Regardless of location or depth of involvement, Judd’s work emphasizes the need to work with nature, particularly in relation to native plantings and stormwater management.

Consideration of natural systems is not the only element that characterizes Judd’s work. Collaboration can also be seen in his endeavors. Judd’s approach and innovative designs have given him the opportunity to work alongside a wide range of agencies and groups, including: the Environmental Protection Agency, US Department of Agriculture, US National Park Service, Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM), Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium, Alabama Cooperative Extension System, and multiple cities across Alabama, among others.

Perhaps more importantly, Judd stresses the inclusion of all voices in the design process, often working directly with underserved populations to help transform the landscapes of their communities through the power of their vision and the application of innovative design. This commitment to people also spills over into his work in academia, where his dedication to his students and to advancing sustainability within the field of landscape architecture can clearly be seen through the praises of his students and his many presentations on sustainable landscape design and practice.

Judd is a 2007 graduate of Auburn University’s MS Landscape Architecture program and earned his BS in Horticulture from Auburn in 2003. He currently serves as the principal landscape architect of his firm, 2D Studio, LLC, as well as an adjunct faculty member in the Master of Landscape Architecture program.
