2014 Common Book Writing Contest

Ellen Rankins

Ellen Rankins, junior, received first place in the 2014 Common Book Writing Contest. Rankins is a Cussetta, Alabama native and an animal science major. Her poem submission, “To Try,” strongly impacted the judges and revealed her understanding of the themes of the novel.

Rankins said she appreciated author William Kamkwamba’s ability to make a better life for his family through using wind to create power for his country. She dug deeper into the story of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind to write her poem and found that there are many assets at her fingertips that people often take for granted. “William was able to take the little amount of knowledge and few possessions he had to make a better life for himself,” said Rankins.

Rankins also won third place in the 2012 contest for her poem about The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.
