Finley Doyle is a junior in the Auburn University Graphic Design program. She recently received an award from Ann Willoughby and Auburn faculty for her work entitled “Typography”.
The concept for this project was exploration of what makes a letterform, a letterform. How much of a letter needs to be revealed to be identifiable? It was also an examination of the fine details in a few of the foundation typefaces we see every day. The project began with creation of close crops of the letters that make up the word “typography.” I then pieced them together to create an abstract, yet readable composition. The primary font I focused on was Bodoni. I played with the high contrast, finials, and negative space between letters to create a fun composition that both connected letters in a visually appealing way and guided you down the piece.
